On the surface, social media can seem relatively easy. After all, it doesn’t take a professional to create your own Facebook page and make posts once in a while, most of us do it. But if you’ve ever tried making social media content for your business, you’ll notice things get harder than you imagined. In this post we’ll tackle the hard truths when it comes to maintaining a social media presence, and reveal the antidotes to help you out!

Social media takes a lot of time.

Just the process of setting up business pages alone can be a time consuming activity, which is why most don’t even make it past that step! I’ve also seen clients post so frequently in the beginning that they burn out almost immediately. Your antidote: Prioritize post quality over quantity. Posting often is great for quicker follower gain, but posting high quality content regularly (at least 1-3 times a week) is a sweet spot where you are still updating your followers but not overwhelming your schedule. If you want to adjust your strategy for more follower gain, it's simple: you have to increase the time you invest in your social. Start with a plan you can maintain.

Content planning is hard.

This is another area where I’ve seen many businesses use so much energy overplanning that they get overwhelmed before they even start. Having a plan that’s too detailed, too rigid, or takes more than one spreadsheet is a recipe for making things much harder than they need to be. Your antidote: Keep your plan simple. Don’t get me wrong, planning is great, but use it in a way that supports you and doesn't lock up your creativity. Stick to one or two pre-determined themes per week, and make them count. Always be specific, but also flexible.

Followers don’t come easy.

When it comes to social media, the best way to get followers (besides paid ads) is an effective strategy and engaging content. This is the hardest truth to accept because it is (sadly) a very common misconception, that gaining followers in high numbers should be quick and simple. If it was that easy everyone would have massive amounts of followers! Your antidote: Post consistently and forget numbers. When you focus on creating content that your followers value, you’ll increase respect for your business, get higher engagement, and set yourself up for success for the future.

When you prioritize post quality, keep your plan simple, and post consistently you can overcome some of the biggest challenges of maintaining a social media presence. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a social media professional, we understand your struggles and we’re here to help. Feel free to ask me anything in the comments!
